Q&A with Doug Hess
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team will get its season underway on Wednesday afternoon when they travel across town to take on Villanova at 4:00 p.m. The Dragons will be looking to take the first step towards a third straight Philadelphia Soccer Six Championship when they visit the Wildcats, who opened their season last Friday with a 4-0 victory over Manhattan.
Drexel opens its season with its first three games on the road. After taking on Villanova, the Dragons will head to Omaha to take on Creighton on September 4 followed by a trip to Rutgers on the 10th before opening its home schedule against Lafayette on September 14.
The Dragons have dominated the overall series with Villanova throughout the years, going 15-4-2. That includes a 2-0 whitewashing of the Wildcats at Vidas Field last season, part of the Dragons' 2-0 Soccer Six season which earned them a share of the league crown.
Under second-year head coach Doug Hess, the Dragons will feature a young squad in 2011, with just one senior on the roster. Nevertheless, Hess is quick to point out that the team does not lack collegiate soccer experience. Of the 19 returning players from last year's team, 15 started at least two of the Dragons' games, and all 19 started at least once during the spring season. The Dragons return their top four goal scorers from last season in junior Nathan Page, senior Andrew Goldberg, sophomore Ken Tribbett and junior Malcolm LeBourne, although Goldberg will miss Wednesday's match with a knee injury.
Drexel and Villanova will get underway at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the West Campus Soccer Complex at Villanova.
