BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA – Three days after leading nearly the entire way at Pittsburgh, the Drexel women's basketball team was unable to grab a lead at Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night, falling to the Hawks 59-50. Hollie Mershon led all scorers with 20 points, but the Dragons' offense never got going as they fell to 3-2 on the season.
After the Hawks' Michelle Baker and Drexel's Tyler Hale exchanged baskets early on, Saint Joseph's went on an 8-0 run go up, 10-2. The Hawks did not let up from there.
The Dragons trailed 31-20 at the half, with Mershon's 10 points leading the way. Although they turned the ball over just 12 times and outrebounded the Hawks 42-36, Drexel shot just 28.1 percent, and could not cut into the lead until late in the half.
With 7:08 to play, Katie Kuester hit two free throws to extend the Hawks' lead to 50-32. From there, Drexel closed the game on an 18-9 run as they attempted to climb back into it, but that proved too little, too late.
Mershon and Kamile Nacickaite, who finished with 12 points, have reached double figures in each of the Dragons' first five games. Taylor Wootton added six points and four boards for Drexel. Baker and Kuester each scored 15 to lead the Hawks.
Drexel will be back in action on Sunday, when they open Colonial Athletic Association play at UNCW. The Dragons and Seahawks will tip things off at 1:00 p.m.
