Philadelphia – Susan Ciufo chipped in a goal off a cross from Elizabeth Koch with under 15 minutes left in the game to give Drexel a 1-0 win over Ohio University (1-3). The Dragons held off a number of Bobcat scoring opportunities in the first half and were able to turn the tide to collect the win in the second stanza. Jenna Phillips turned in a stellar performance in goal to earn the shutout for Drexel (2-1).
The Bobcats controlled play in the first half while outshooting Drexel 6-1 and earning five corners without yielding one to the Dragons. Ohio's Brook Edwards appeared to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with eight minutes left in the half when she knocked a shot over the shoulder of Drexel goalie Jenna Phillips. The goal was disallowed however, due to a foot infraction in the area, keeping the game scoreless going into the half.
Phillips made two saves in the period, including a qualify stop on a corner taken by the Bobcats Louzeth Schutte at the 17:15 mark.
In the second half it was a different story, however, as Drexel outshot Ohio 10-4 and also earned 10 corners after being held without one in the opening period.
Drexel broke through with just under 15 minutes left in the game after earning a series of corners. Elizabeth Koch intercepted a clearing pass just outside the area. She carried it in and slid a pass across to the left side where Susan Ciufo chipped it past Ohio goalie Courtney Seiders on her stick side, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead.
Phillips made four saves to earn her first shutout on the season. One of her most impressive stops came with just under eight minutes to play when she turned aside a blast off the stick of Schutte on a penalty corner. She also made a sprawling dive to break up a would-be cross at the top of the area just minutes later.
Courtney Seiders made six saves in goal for Ohio while her team was outshot 11-10 and outcornered 10-9 in the contest.
Drexel is back in action next Sunday, Sept. 11 when they travel to play at No. 10 Duke in a 1:00 game.
