Philadelphia – Drexel scored two goals in the span of less than a minute in the first half and went on to defeat Wagner, 4-1, in a non-conference match at Vidas Field. Senior captain Kim Chiarelli had a goal and assist during the flurry as the Dragons improved to 3-3 on the season. Chiarelli also had an assist on Drexel's final goal.
Chiarelli got the Dragons on the board with her first goal of the year in the 26th minute. Drexel had a corner and Chiarelli fired the ball into the box. It deflected off Wagner (4-3) goalkeeper Katie Marcy, who was caught up coming out for the ball. Just 56 seconds later, Chiarelli had a free kick after Jenna Lindsay was taken down just outside of the box. Chiarelli's kick was deflected by Courtney Wylie into the net for Drexel's second goal.
The Dragons added to the lead early in the second half. Lindsay, Drexel's leading scorer the last two seasons, scored her first goal of the season after a nice set up by Jess Lowinger. The sophomore cut around a defender and gave Lindsay a feed right in front of the cage, and the junior from Thorofare, N.J., scored her 16th career goal.
Wagner broke the Dragons run in the 57th minute. Julie Vigliotti, the team's leading scorer, intercepted a Drexel clearing pass and fired a shot past Nicole Sinclair into the lower left corner to make it 3-1. The Dragons got an insurance goal in the 84th minute. It was once again Chiarelli making an impact on the offensive end. She took a corner and bent it back nicely to Michelle McKinley, who tapped it to freshman Jess Sarkisian, who headed it in for her first collegiate goal.
Victoria Troccoli played the first half in goal for Drexel and had one save without allowing a goal. Nicole Sinclair played the second half and also had a save.
The Dragons are off until Friday night, when they face George Washington University in the Blue Hen Tournament at the University of Delaware. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. Drexel will face La Salle on Sunday in the same tournament.
