Philadelphia – Drexel women's basketball player Gabriela Marginean and men's lacrosse player Colin Ambler have been named the 2010 recipients of the Mary and John Semanik Awards. The awards are given to the outstanding male and female student-athletes who best exemplify the scholarship and athletic ideals of Mr. and Mrs. Semanik, the former Drexel Directors of Athletics. The announcement was made at the Best of the Blue and Gold reception held this afternoon.
Marginean, a native of Romania, recently completed an historic career on the hardwood at Drexel and became the first Dragon to play in the WNBA. During her time on campus, she was honored for both her tremendous playing ability and her leadership on the court and in the community. Marginean was a four-time All-CAA selection, the 2009 CAA Player of the Year and a 2010 recipient of the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award. She was twice named the Philadelphia Inquirer's Academic All-Area Women's Basketball Performer of the Year and this season was named to the CAA's All-Academic Team. On the court, Marginean left an indelible mark on women's basketball at Drexel and in Philadelphia. Her 2,581 career points is more than any player in the history of the CAA and Philadelphia women's basketball. She led Drexel to its first CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009 and its first Postseason WNIT berth this past season. Marginean will graduate with degrees in psychology and sport management and last weekend she made her WNBA debut playing for the Minnesota Lynx.
Ambler, a co-captain of the lacrosse team in both 2009 and 2010, was a leader of a team that was ranked as high as seventh in the nation this season. It was the highest ranking of any Drexel team in more than 50 years. He was honored by the CAA in each of his four seasons at Drexel. Ambler was the 2007 Rookie of the Year and was an All-Conference selection in each of the last three seasons. He finished his career with 66 career assists, the eighth-highest total in Drexel history. Ambler is also 11th all time in both goals and points at Drexel. In the classroom, the Abington, Pa. native was named to the Dean's List seven times, was named a CAA Commissioner's Award winner three times and is once again nominated for the CAA Men's Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year, an award he won as a freshman. He was also named a CoSIDA Second Team Acadmic All-District selection. Ambler will graduate with a degree in business administration.
The Drexel Athletics Department recognizes its top performers in the classroom and on the playing field every season at what is now known as the Best of the Blue and Gold reception. Student-athletes honored at the reception included all-conference performers, league players of the year, Drexel scholar-athletes (3.6 grade-point average or above) and other academic and athletic awards earned during the 2009-10 academic year.
