Drexel Women's Varsity Eight Defends City Championship, Claim Kelly Cup for Second Straight Season

The Drexel women's varsity eight claimed the Kelly Cup at the Bergen Cup Regatta for the second straight season. The race is viewed by most in the rowing community as the Philadelphia city championship. The Dragons' men's varsity eight took second place to Temple. Along with the women's varsity eight triumph the men's pair also claimed first place on the Schuylkill.
The Dragons' freshmen four, in the Dawn Byers boat with coxswain Matt Weston, stroke Nick Jensen, Dylan Siegfried, John Luciani and bow Corey Barnes opened the day for Drexel with a fourth-place finish with a time of 6:57.4. The women's varsity four in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Brooke Wertan, Brianna Simmers, Jill Skovran and bow Chloe Swansen claimed third place as the boat finished ahead of Philadelphia University with a time of 7:31.2. The Drexel men's varsity four in the Toby and Kim Oxholm boat with coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Michael Gartland, Peter Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and bow Brennan Haydon also placed third as the boat outraced two entries from Temple with a time of 6:43.8. The women's freshman eight rowed in the John A. Daskalakis boat with coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, stroke Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Leila Aboharb, Lillian Reed, Brogan Piecara, Mairin McKinlay, Kathie Cheng and bow Danielle Frigerio was defeated by Saint Joseph's in a two-boat race that saw the Dragons finish with a time of 7:49.4. The Dragons' men's freshmen eight event finished second as the Vince Vidas boat with coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Adam Cordi, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Kam Palagi, Zach Antunes and bow Paul Wisniowski defeated a boat from Saint Joseph's but also finished behind a Hawks' boat. Drexel's time in the event was 6:09.2.
The women's second varsity eight race featured the Marlene Buckley with coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Samantha Cowan, Megan Bush and bow Asiya Mahmud. The boat took second with a time of 7:01.5 behind Saint Joseph's but ahead of Temple. The men's second varsity eight with coxswain Steve Matyas, Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Ernesto Del Valle, Lorenzo Albala, Michael Golden and bow Pat McGann also claimed second place with a time of 6:13.7 as the boat edged Saint Joseph's at the line by just 0.2 seconds.
The women's varsity eight defended their Kelly Cup title from last year as coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain won by more than three seconds over second-place Saint Joseph's. The Dragons boat finished in 6:48.0. The men's varsity eight consisting of coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Aleksander Radovic, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Greg Pierce, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Nick Buyse and bow Jacob Sloan took second place ahead of Saint Joseph's by more than 14 seconds as the Dragons crossed at 6:00.2. Perhaps the most impressive finish came from the men's pair as Liam O'Neill and Peter Schmidt crossed the line at 7:07.2 nearly 40 full seconds ahead of second-place La Salle.
