Drexel Crew Sweeps Eights in Dual with Lehigh and Villanova
3/20/2010 12:42:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
Philadelphia - Drexel Crew continued its spring season as the Dragons welcomed Villanova and Lehigh to the Schuylkill River for dual racing. Drexel produced first-place finishes in the women's varsity four, the men's novice eight, the women's varsity and second varsity eight and the men's varsity eight. The Dragons swept all races with eights in their final tune-up before the San Diego Crew Classic next weekend.
The racing began with the women's varsity four with Drexel's Sandi Sheller boat featuring coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Jill Skovran, Samantha Cowan, Brogan Piecara and bow Brianna Simmers taking first place over both Villanova and Lehigh. In the following race, the LeBow College of Business boat with coxswain Michelle Lehmann, Mike Golden, Pete Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and Brennan Hayden finished third in the men's varsity four.
The Dragons began their sweep of the eights with a victory by the Peggy Greenawalt boat in the men's novice eight. Coxswain Justin Malley, Kurt Linton, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Paul Wisniowski, Zach Antunes and Adam Cordi outlasted Lehigh's novice eight. Drexel won the men's pair as Andrew Burns and Pete Schmidt topped Villanova's entry. The Wildcats won the men's novice four over Drexel's Tobey and Kim Oxholm boat of coxswain Arlynn Katz, Nick Jensen, Scott Nordsiek, John Luciani and Corey Barnes. It was a similar result in the women's novice four as the Dawn Byers boat of coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek and Megan Bush took second to Villanova.
It would be the last race the Dragons would lose as the Dragons' top eights came through on top. The John A. Daskalakis boat of coxswain Cate Khella, Natasha Martines, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Chloe Swansen, Asiya Mahmud and Brooke Wertan won the women's second varsity eight race over the Wildcats. The Marlene Buckley boat followed with a triumph over Lehigh and Villanova as coxswain Alex Paulin, Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle Casondra Clawson and Mary Kain won the women's varsity eight.
While equipment problems caused the Dragons' top men's varsity eight boat to fail to finish, Drexel's "B" boat, the Vince Vidas, picked up the slack by outlasting Lehigh and Villanova to win the race. Coxswain Michelle Lehmann, Aleksander Radovic, Greg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Filip Topalovic, Pat McGann, Liam O'Neill and Jacob Sloan finished first while Lehigh took second and Villanova took third.
