Drexel (3-5) will face a field that includes Bucknell, Morgan State, St. Francis (Pa.), Seton Hall and the host Retrievers. The team has been off for a week following a strong showing at the UC - Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic in which the Dragons knocked off the host Gauchos and also won in walk-off fashion against Wisconsin. Tamra Griffin is the Bears' top batter, hitting .500 on the season with seven RBIs. Megan Johnson leads Morgan State from the pitching circle with a 2-1 record, an ERA of 2.40 and 14 strikeouts.
On Sunday Drexel will face Seton Hall (3-9) at 9:00 a.m. before facing St. Francis (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m. The Red Flash are 3-9 on the season after incurring five straight losses at the Rebel Spring Games in DeLand, Fla. last week. Stephanie Griffin leads the team with a .458 batting average while Megan Layne has recorded all three pitching victories for St. Francis this season.
The Seton Hall Pirates were swept in a doubleheader against Towson last week. Brittany Hammer is the Pirates' top hitter with a .462 batting average. Ashley Forsyth has recorded two of Seton Hall's three ptiching victories this season.
Drexel's freshman class came up big at the UCSB Tournament last weekend. Pitcher Shyann Beach recorded her first collegiate win in extra-innings against Wisconsin. In that contest, freshman outfielder Hanna Parrish beat out an RBI bunt single that helped Drexel rally from a deficit in extra-innings. Rookie Jen Reading belted her first career homer in the game to tie the score and force extra frames. Also on the weekend, senior Ashley Botelho claimed sole possession of Drexel's all-time home runs record when she hit her 19th career round-tripper.
Drexel was orignally scheduled to play Bucknell on Saturday afternoon, but the tournament schedule has been changed due to the threat of rain on Friday and throughout the weekend. Check www.drexeldragons.com for any schedule changes during the weekend.
