Philadelphia - Steve Mytych and Shane Fenningham put together back-to-back pins to give the Dragons a combined 12 crucial points as Drexel defeated Columbia, 21-16. The teams split the 10 duals but Drexel's six bonus points gave the Dragons the edge as the Lions only earned one bonus point. Kyle Frey clinched the dual victory with a 6-4 win at heavyweight in the final bout.
Columbia got its only win with bonus points in the 125-pound match as Kyle Gilchrist defeated Michael Gomez, 11-2. Mytych and Fenningham then followed with their wins by fall with Mytych's coming in just 52 seconds while Fenningham needed 2:31 to pin Ryan Doyle. Columbia took the 149-pound match but Joe Booth responded for Drexel with a 10-4 win at 157 pounds. The Lions won the next two bouts but Justin Wieller earned a key 3-1 decision with a takedown in the third period being the difference against Cary Aldrich. Lou Miller staved off a team defeat when he picked up a 5-3 win to cut the Drexel lead to 18-16 with one match remaining. Frey answered the call for the Dragons with a hard-fought 6-4 victory that included a third-period takedown by Frey and an immediate reversal from Kevin Lester. Frey was able to hold off Lester to earn the victory in the heavyweight bout and the dual for the Dragons.
Drexel will wrestle Colonial Athletic Association rival Rider later tonight at 7:00 p.m.
