Drexel Drops 27-9 Decision to Rider
2/13/2010 8:47:37 PM | Wrestling
Philadelphia - Drexel fell to Colonial Athletic Association opponent Rider, 27-9, in the Dragons' final appearance at the Daskalakis Athletic Center of the season. Steve Mytych, Joe Booth and Justin Wieller each picked up victories against the Broncs. The loss dropped the Dragons' record to 11-13 overall and 3-3 in CAA action.
Ilyas Elmsaouri opened the dual with a 4-2 victory over Michael Gomez before Mytych made his final appearance at the DAC. Drexel's all-time leader in wins ended in style as he defeated the second-ranked 133-pounder in the CAA, Jimmy Kirchner, 11-5. Rider picked up the next two matches before Booth won a 12-6 decision over Zac Cibula at 157 pounds.
Rider extended its lead with wins with bonus points in the 165 and 174-pound match as Rob Morrison won by major decision while Jim Resnick won by technical fall. Wieller then followed with a sudden victory triumph over Mike Ward, 6-4, at 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, Tyler Smith won a wild bout that saw Shawn Fausey nearly send the match to sudden victory only to be taken to his back and giving up three near-fall points for a 10-3 defeat. In an anticlimatic finish to the dual, the rematch of last year's CAA Championship final at heavyweight was stopped early in the first period when Kyle Frey dislocated a finger and could not continue.
Drexel returns to the mat on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when the Dragons travel to Rutgers for a 7:00 p.m. dual.
