Celik and Faykes Lead Dragons in a Strong Performance at the Terrier Invitational

Boston – Men's and women's swimming compiled 11 top-five finishes including four first-place finishes by the men in the Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University over the weekend. Drexel saw new individual records set in four events as the Dragons swam to a fifth-place finish overall.
Men's swimmer Doga Celik led the charge with three of the Dragons' four first-place finishes as he won every event he entered. Celik finished the 50 free in 20.98 and the 200 free in 1:40.06, as well as breaking Drexel's 100 free record with a 45.25. Celik was also part of the men's 200 free relay team, along with Matthew Tannenbaum, Armagan Yavuz and Alex Bagshaw, that finished second in the event with a 1:23.29, breaking another Drexel record.
Tannenbaum also competed in the 50 free earning a third-place finish with a time of 21.10. For his second individual top-five performance, Tannenbaum touched the wall with a 46.77 to take fourth in the 100 free. Yavuz also earned two individual top-five finishes when he swam a 1:49.82 200 fly, good for first-place, and a 50.66 100 fly to finish fifth in the event.
Freshman Greg Oprendek also earned a second and third-place finish with a 57.44 and 2:04.10 in the 100- and 200- breaststroke, respectively, giving Drexel 33 team points.
The women's team also broke two Drexel records including the 200 back and the 200 medley. Gizem Yali's time of 2:03.80 broke the previous Drexel mark and earned her a fourth-place finish in the 200 back.
Sophomore Lauren Faykes touched the wall in 2:03.94 for a fourth-place finish, beating her career best by nearly two seconds moving her into second on Drexel's all-time list. Faykes was also a member of the women's 200 medley team that set the new Drexel record at 1:48.36. Maria Coman, Malin Viberg, Devina Tyagi and Faykes beat the previous time by .04 seconds.
Swimming and Diving will close out the 2010 calendar year Dec. 2-4 as they compete in the Short Course National Championship.
