Philadelphia – The Drexel women's soccer team's 2010 season came to a close on Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to Delaware on Senior Night at Vidas Field. The Dragons (7-11-1, 3-7-1) played a strong second half, but a goal on a penalty kick gave Delaware a two-goal lead which proved to be too much to overcome.
Delaware (8-10-1, 4-6-1) got the lead for good in the 16th minute of the game. The Blue Hens Chelsea Duffy sent a ball to the right side of the box to a waiting Shannon Kearney. The freshman moved in a few steps and fired one past Nicole Sinclair for the first goal of the game. That proved to be the only goal of the half. The Blue Hens outshot Drexel, 6-2, in the first 45 minutes.
The second half was controlled by Drexel, but the Dragons couldn't get on the scoreboard. Delaware increased its lead to two goals on a penalty kick. Amy Pickard was bumped in the box by a Drexel defender and awarded the kick. She beat a sprawling Sinclair to make it 2-0.
The Dragons showed no quit after the second goal and stepped up their offensive attack. Drexel outshot the Blue Hens, 12-7, in the second half and had five corner kicks, but could not get the ball past Breanna Stemier, who made all six of her saves in the final half.
The game marked the final appearance in a Drexel uniform for Kim Chiarelli, Michelle Donnelly, Michelle McKinley and Nicole Sinclair. All four players started the match. Sinclair made five saves in goal. Drexel won three matches in CAA play in 2010 and had 10 points in league play. It was the most wins and points a Drexel team has achieved since joining the league.
