The Huskies put two on the board in a first half that saw them outshoot the Dragons 8-1, put three of those shots on goal, and dominate the offensive chances. For the game, Northeastern outshot Drexel 14-7 and outcornered the Dragons 6-4.
Oliver Blum made two saves in net for the Huskies, but saw his would-be cleansheet marked with a goal by Dan Vignola in the final 40 seconds of play.
Northeastern struck early after capitalizing on a Drexel miscue off a free kick in the 10th minute. The Dragons turned the ball over in their own defensive third directly off a free kick. Dante Marini intercepted the pass and fed a through ball from the middle of the pitch into the left side of the goal box. Don Anding collected the pass and took a touch before beating keeper Pentti Pussinen on a shot to the opposite side of the goal.
The Huskies second goal of the half came just over 10 minutes later and was set up by a well-played pass from freshman Laurence Braude. The rookie midfielder scooped an entry pass into the air and over Drexel's back line from about 25 yards out. The Huskies' leading scorer Michael Kennedy ran onto the service and connected with a shot high to the right side to put his team on top 2-0.
Drexel nearly found its first goal in the 27th minute when Philip Hagerty found Nathan Page dashing to the left side of the box. Page attempted to dribble the ball around keeper Oliver Blum, but the cagey Blum pulled the ball off Page's foot while diving to the ground.
Anding had a good chance at a second goal with about 12 minutes left in the half. He worked a give-and-go with Marini on the left side of the goal box and managed to dispossess a Drexel defender 10 yards in front of the goal before pounding a shot to the near side. Pussinen blocked the blast but did not collect the ball. Anding lashed a side volley back at the goal but it went wide of its target and hit the post before ricocheting out of bounds.
The Huskies dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Dragons 8-1, with three shots on goal.
Anding put the match well out of the Dragons' reach with a skilled finish off a cross from Kennedy in the 71st minute. Kennedy set up the deflating score with a run to the right side of the box that drew the attention of a number of Drexel defenders. He then slid a pass across the goal face where Anding met the pass behind his body and flicked it in with his heel to make it a 3-0 Northeastern lead.
Despite allowing the three tallies, Pussinen made a number of impressive saves in net for the Dragons, making three on the game. With 15 minutes left in the match, Northeastern's Top Phataraprasit headed a corner kick to the left of the goal. Pussinen was shielded by the defense but picked up the ball at the last moment and dove to deflect it.
Vignola's first career score came off a corner kick by taken by Anthony Bafile in the last minute of play. Bafile served the ball from the left side, Vignola sprinted in from the right and headed it home to put the Dragons on the board.
Drexel resumes play on Saturday, Oct. 30 when the Dragons travel to play at James Madison in a 7:00 p.m. match in Harrisonburg, Va.
