Katie Duncan's penalty kick in the second overtime period gave Drexel a 4-3 victory at VCU on Sunday afternoon in Richmond. The Dragons tied the game late to force overtime and converted the PK in the 105th minute to earn their second CAA win in the last week. Alex Vazquez and Kim Chiarelli each had a goal and an assist for the Dragons.
Drexel (6-9-1, 2-5-1) was awarded the penalty kick after Jenna Lindsay was taken down in the box by a VCU (5-7-4, 1-5-2) defender. Duncan stepped up and drilled a shot into the lower left corner to give the Dragons their second win in their last three games. .
The Dragons trailed 3-2 with less than 10 minutes to play, but tied the game when Vazquez headed a ball past the Rams' keeper in the 82nd minute of play. Chiarelli, who scored the game's first goal of the game, set up the game-tying goal. Lauryn Hutchinson had tied given VCU the lead just two minutes earlier.
Drexel led 1-0 at the half on Chiarelli's goal, but VCU answered on a goal from Azania. The Dragons, as they have done in recent matches, immediately answered and got the lead back when Ashley Klun scored her second goal in three matches. Klun's goal was set up by Jess Lowinger and Vazquez.
Nicole Sinclair picked up the win in goal for Drexel. She made four saves in the match. The teams each had 15 shots. The Dragons had six corner kicks, while the Rams had four. Megan Lynch also had four saves for VCU.
Drexel returns home their last three matches of the season, beginning on Friday night against Towson. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at Vidas Field.
