Philadelphia - Drexel Head Coach Jack Childs earned his 500th career win as the Dragons defeated George Mason, 24-11, before falling to Missouri, 31-9. The Dragons were led by Justin Wieller and Jack Callender who moved up in weight class in the absence of injured heavyweight mainstay Kyle Frey. Along with Wieller and Callender, Steve Mytych, Brett McCurdy, Joe Booth, Alex Rinaldi and Shawn Fausey also defeated Mason wrestler to help secure the milestone victory for Childs. Against Missouri, Mytych, Booth and Wieller picked up their second wins of the day, though the Tigers took the other seven matches.
Mason opened the dual with Drexel with a win by technical fall at 125 pounds to give the Patriots an early 5-0 lead. Mytych responded with a first-period pinning of Zachory Huxford to hand the Dragons a 6-5 advantage. After Mason took the 141-pound match, the Dragons reeled off three straight wins. McCurdy held off Brandon Bucher while Booth earned a 10-4 win over Aaron Keeton. Rinaldi capped the run with a 6-0 triumph. The three wins by decision gave Drexel a 15-8 lead. At 174 pounds, Mendbagana Tovuujav, the 2009 CAA Championships Most Outstanding Wrestler, picked up a 12-6 victory over Dave Woodall to close the Drexel lead to 15-11. But Drexel's heaviest wrestlers carried the load from there with three wins to close the match. Fausey earned a 12-6 win before Wieller stepped up to 197 pounds to face Bill Widener of Mason. With the Dragons ahead 18-11, a victory from Wieller would clinch the dual for the Dragons as well as the landmark victory for Childs. Wieller used a second-period escape and penalty point and fought off Bill Widener's attempts for a third-period takedown to seal a 2-0 victory as the Drexel bench began to celebrate Childs' 500th win. Callendar, Drexel's usual 197-pounder, won the capper, 7-2, in his first appearance in a heavyweight match.
Against Missouri, Drexel won three thrilling matches. After a scoreless first period, Mytych escaped early to start the second period. With Mytych leading 1-0 heading into the third, Missouri's Brad Wisdom chose to start the period on the bottom. Mytych rode Wisdom for all two minutes of the final frame to secure a 2-0 victory. At 157 pounds, Booth and Pat Wright exchanged escapes as the only scoring in regulation. In the sudden victory period, Booth executed the match's only takedown to clinch the win. Wieller's 184-pound match was a carbon copy of Booth's win as Wieller earned a 3-1 sudden victory triumph with a takedown in the extra period of Todd Porter.
