The men's basketball team hosts Hofstra in a noon contest at the DAC on Saturday. The game, which kicks off Homecoming Weekend, can be seen live on The Comcast Network. Following Saturday's game, Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving will host Providence at 2:00 p.m. in the final home meet of the season. Prior to the start of the meet, Drexel's six seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities. The day's action will be capped by a wrestling tri-meet as the Head Coach Jack Childs will look for his 500th career coaching victory as the Dragons host George Mason at 5:00 p.m. and nationally ranked Missouri at 8:00 p.m.
Drexel and Hofstra are meeting for the 69th time, with Drexel leading the series, 37-31. The Dragons won both of the meetings last year, sweeping the season series after being swept the previous season.
Drexel is now 5-3 in the CAA after a convincing 78-57 win against James Madison on Wednesday. Jamie Harris scored 20 points and was 4-for-5 from behind the arc and Chris Fouch added 13 points and three three-pointers. Samme Givens grabbed 15 boards as the Dragons pounded the Dukes on the glass, 47-25. The Dragons trailed by five early in the second half, but scored 51 points in the final 20 minutes and shot 61 percent in the half. They made eight of their 11 long-range shots over the final 20 minutes.
The Pride is now 9-11 overall and 2-6 in league play. Hofstra enters the game on a four-game losing streak after falling at home to George Mason, 90-72. Charles Jenkins continued his outstanding start to the season with 26 points, six assists and five steals against Mason. He leads the team in scoring, assists, steals and has 20 three-pointers. Chaz Williams tied a career-high with 20 points and was 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Mikos Szabo chipped in with a double-double, and freshman Halil Kanacevic grabbbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.
The men's swimming & diving team is coming off of a victory on Tuesday against visiting Rider while the women's team dropped its dual with the Broncs. The men improved to 3-1 at Drexel Pool as Sherif Madkour was victorious in three individual events while Mert Karsiyakalilar, Doga Celik and diver Ian Jevnick each took first place in two events. The victory moved the Dragons' overall record above .500 as the team stands at 6-5 on the season. For the women, Drexel swept the breaststroke events against Rider but the Broncs took the overall victory. Jessica Csakai, Amanda Brown and Malin Wiberg each earned first-place finishes for the Dragons. Diver Megan Halicek picked up a pair of second-place finishes.
Drexel wrestling enters the tri-meet with Mason and Missouri after dropping two contests at last weekend's Colonial Athletic Association Duals in Fairfax, Va. The Dragons lost to Binghamton and Old Dominion, though Steve Mytych, Joe Booth and Kyle Frey each won both of their matches. Mytych is 5-0 in 2010 and has been named the CAA's Co-Wrestler of the Month and CAA Wrestler of the Week in his senior season. He is currently ranked 10th in the nation with a record of 22-6 at 133 pounds after competing at 125 pounds in his first three seasons in University City. Frey leads the team with a 24-7 overall mark, including 10 wins by major decision. The junior is looking for his first trip to the NCAA Championships after falling one win short a season ago. Booth is a CAA Rookie of the Year candidate with an overall record of 13-4 this season. He has won his last four matches and is 7-1 in duals this season with his only loss coming in a season-opening match against Maryland.
Drexel Head Coach Jack Childs is looking for his 500th career coaching victory today. Childs, who is in his 34th season at Drexel, is the leader among all active coaches in wins. Last season he celebrated his 400th career Division I victory and will collect his 500th overall career victory with the Dragons' next triumph. Prior to his arrival at Drexel, Childs posted a record of 89-17 at Stevens Trade School (now Stevens Tech) in his six seasons as head coach. At Drexel, Childs has compiled a 410-264-9 overall record.
