Box Score
Fairfield, Conn. – Susan Ciufo tied a Drexel single-game record with three assists while Jen Cairone and Kim Tunell each scored a pair of goals as the Dragons dropped Fairfield, 5-1. The win moved No. 12 Drexel to 6-1 on the season while the Stags dipped to 3-4.
Fairfield opened the scoring on its first offensive opportunity of the game as Molly Byrnes put a rebound past Jenna Phillips. Drexel answered when Susan Ciufo sent a pass to the middle for Cairone. The junior dribbled right and moved around the Stags' charging goalie and pushed the ball into the cage. Drexel took its first lead as Kim Tunell sent a ball toward the left post of a penalty corner. Ciufo controlled the ball and sent a pass across the crease that Cairone flipped into the net. Fairfield nearly leveled the score with four minutes remaining as Julianne Bosse fired a shot off of the Stags' first penalty corner of the game that Phillips used a toe to keep out of the cage. Drexel counterattacked with Ciufo sending a ball across the middle but Mastropaolo's one-timer rang the post.
Just 18 seconds after the start of the second half, Monica Baick sent a ball from the top of the center to Ciufo in front who deposited the ball into the left side of the cage. Just minutes later, Coach Zelenak substituted her entire front line for Ashley Santee, Elizabeth Koch and Brittney Hausman. The trio helped generate numerous scoring opportunities and several penalty corners though they could not add to the scoreboard. The starters returned with 15 minutes remaining and just a few minutes later, Ciufo sent a pass from right to a wide open Tunell who ripped a shot into the net. Drexel finally scored without the help of Ciufo when Tunell picked up her second goal as she fired a shot on a penalty corner that rattled the cage. Sofia Sanguinetti and Mastropaolo were credited with assists on the play.
Drexel outshot Fairfield, 25-6, and earned 13 corners to the Stags' three. Phillips made three saves in goal while Caitlin O'Donnell stopped 14 Drexel shots.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 as the Dragons host city-rival Temple at 7:00 p.m.
