Philadelphia
– Rookie Malcolm LeBourne scored twice for the Dragons and reshirt freshman Tim Washam recorded a shutout in his first career start as Drexel topped Philadelphia Soccer Six rival La Salle 2-0. Washam made two stops in goal for the shutout to help his team improve to 4-1-0 on the season and earn a shot at the Soccer Six title with its second city win of the season.

Drexel outshot La Salle 22-11 in the match, but did not encounter many quality scoring chances until the latter half of the second period. Senior Fabio Assumpção created a number of opportunities in the period and the freshman LeBourne was the fortunate beneficiary of a number of them in the contest.

After doubling the Explorers shot attempts in the second half, the Dragons finally found their goal in the 72nd minute. Assumpção rolled a feed to LeBourne on the left side of the goal box. LeBourne deked the keeper into a diving swipe at the ball, but the rookie striker kept the ball on his foot and dribbled it past for an open-net score.

The freshman nearly got a second tally in the 82nd minute when Syklar Olson found him open on a cross to the right side. He quickly deposited the assist, but the goal was disallowed when he was flagged for being offside.

LeBourne tallied his second score of the match when he cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Assumpção from 17 yards out for an insurance goal with just over a minute left in the contest.

Drexel had another scoring chance in the final four minutes when, after being pressured by Assumpção, Quigley struck a backspinning ball straight up in the air. The ball spun into the goal when it struck the turf and Mike Crosse found it at his foot for a quick strike. But Quigley read the play and promptly blocked the shot and dispersed the scoring chance.

The two teams dueled it out to a scoreless tie at halftime in a physical match between two city rivals. Drexel held a narrow advantage in shots 9-7. But La Salle proved to be the physical aggressor, drawing 10 fouls to Drexel’s two infractions.

Drexel’s first good scoring attempt came 15 minutes into the second period when LeBourne fed a ball to Andrew Goldberg on the left side of the six-yard box. Goldberg threaded a shot across the goal and past a diving Kyle Quigley, but the La Salle defense kept the ball out of net for its keeper and held the Dragons off the board. This attempt seemed to break La Salle’s levy and the Dragons’ offense flowed from that point.

Quigley, the reigning Soccer Six Player of the Week made six saves in goal for La Salle while dropping to 2-2-1 on the season.

Drexel travels to play at the Univ. of Maryland –Baltimore County on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Drexel 0 2 - 2
La Salle 0 0 - 0
