Men's Novice Boats Earn Championship Berths at Murphy Cup Regatta

Philadelphia - Drexel's novice boats flashed its potential as both the eight and four-man boats won their heats to earn spots in the championship finals of each division at the 2009 Murphy Cup Regatta. The men's novice eight boat went on to a fifth-place finish in the final while the novice four boat took sixth.The Dragons' varsity eight finished fourth in its heat while the junior varsity eight took fifth in its heat. Drexel's varsity four boat entry took fourth in its heat.
The novice eight boat cruised in its heat as the Dragons won by almost nine seconds over second-place Delaware. Drexel crossed at 6:17.18 while the Blue Hens finished with a time of 6:26.07. Philadelphia University, Villanova and Lafayette took third through fifth in the heat, respectively. In the final, the Dragons clocked a time of 6:19.65 behind only Penn, Delaware, La Salle and Bucknell.
The novice four topped the Merchant Marine Academy, Villanova and Rutgers-Camden, among others in the third of four heats. The Dragons' time of 7:18.48 sent them to the championship final where they took sixth. There were 22 boats in the novice four field.
