Wrestling Completes Three-Match Win Streak Against Ivy Opponents with Wins over Princeton and Columbia

New York, N.Y. - Drexel wrestling took on a pair of Ivy League opponents in non-conference action as the Dragons downed Princeton, 40-10, before ousting host Columbia, 21-14. In the Dragons previous match, they defeated Brown as they improved to 3-0 on the season against Ivy opponents.
Drexel opened its match against Princeton with a strong start as Michael Gomez dominated Robert Benitez as he earned a technical fall in the second period after leading 16-1. The Tigers forfeited the 133 and 141-pound matches as the Dragons were staked to a 17-0 lead. Robert Robinson took a 5-2 decision at 149-pounds to give Drexel a 20-0 lead. The Tigers got on the board with wins with bonus points at both 157 and 165 pounds to halve the Dragons' lead to 10. A shutout victory by Dave Woodall over Travis Erdman along with a 10-7 triumph by Justin Wieller clinched the dual for the Dragons. Twelfth-ranked Jon Oplinger tacked on a technical fall win before heavyweight Kyle Frey earned a win by fall to cap the match.
The Dragons had a tougher time with Columbia, but Gomez continued his good day as he earned a 6-4 win over Kevin Tao to open the match. The Lions picked up four points to take the lead with a win by major decision at 133 pounds. Matt Dugan regained the lead for the Dragons with a tough 3-0 decision at 141 pounds. Robert Robinson completed his day a perfect 2-0 after outpointing Matt Dunn, 5-3. Columbia edged closer as Derek Sickles took a major decision victory from Drexel's Billy Haydt to pull the Lions to within 9-8 midway through the dual. Scott Hunter came through for the Dragons with a 3-1 sudden victory triumph. Woodall carried on the momentum as he narrowly defeated Mike Wolfer, 4-3 before another one-point win at 184 pounds. Justin Wieller took a 5-4 victory from Kenji Porter to give Drexel a bit of breathing room as the Dragons led 18-9. Oplinger clinched the Drexel victory with a 7-5 win over Lou Miller. Columbia won the heavyweight match by fall to end the dual.
