Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Former Drexel wrestler and current Drexel strength and conditioning assistant Zach Makovsky won all three of his matches at the 2009 FILA World Grappling Championships to earn the 60 kg (132 lb.) World Title. Grappling is a hybrid sport that involves aspects of wrestling, judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Makovsky earned his berth to the World Grappling Championships after winning the USA Team Trials in October. His first match of the World Championships came against Mike Imperato of Canada. Makovsky performed a rear naked choke that resulted in a submission and a berth in the semifinals for the former Drexel 133-pound wrestler. Makovsky defeated John Louro of Canada in the semifinal, 12-2, before defeating countryman Matt Betzhold, a one-leg amputee, by 7-2 decision to clinch the championship.
