Tyagi's Record Breaking Effort Highlights Dragons' Terrapin Cup Invitational

College Park, Md. - Devina Tyagi broke the Drexel school record in the 100 back at the 2009 Terrapin Cup Invitational. The sophomore recorded a time of 58.12 to set a new program best as the Dragons took ninth of 10 teams at one of the most competitive invitations of the region. Maryland won the event while Drexel finished ahead of West Virginia.
Drexel picked up six team points when the 200 free relay team took 14th as Tyagi, Jessica Csakai, Maria Coman and Malin Wiberg finished with a time of 1:40.03. The Dragons collected six more when the 400 medley relay team of Tyagi, Amanda Brown, Coman and Lauren Faykes placed 14th with a time of 4:03.27 while the Dragons' B relay team collected two points for a 16th place finish when Nicole Pirrella, Wiberg, Kelly Scheirer and Sheeba Mankus finished at 4:07.25. The 200 medley relay team gave Drexel its third 14th place finish as Coman, Brown, Faykes and Tyagi clocked a 1:50.28. Drexel picked up two more points when Faykes, Julie Lin, Mankus and Csakai finished 16th in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:56.58. In the 400 free relay Meg Smith, Tyagi, Wiberg and Lin took 15th place with a time of 3:39.32 to add four points to Drexel's total.
In the 100 breast, Brown qualified for the C final with a time of 1:08.52 and then lowered her time in the final when the sophomore posted a 1:08.11 to take third in the C final and 19th place overall. Tyagi also qualified for the C final though she did so in the 100 back. Her time of 59.22 set up her record-breaking 58.12 effort that won the C final and gave her 17th place overall. Coman, the previous recordholder, took 19th overall with a time of 59.34. A pair of Drexel swimmers qualified for the C final in the 200 breast as Wiberg finished 19th with a time of 2:26.62 while Brown clock a 2:27.01 that gave her 20th place overall.
Freshman Megan Halicek, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Women's Diver of the Week, continued her strong season as she placed third in the 1-meter and 12th in the 3-meter. She qualified second in the 1-meter with a score of 242.70 before taking third in the final with a total of 228.10 to finish just over 20 points behind Maryland's Alisa Kurbatova. Halicek's third place was worth 16 team points to Drexel. Halichek's 12th place finish on the 3-meter board with 189.95 to pick up five more points.
