Dragons Finish Fourth of Eight at Terrapin Cup Invitational

College Park, Md. - Drexel men's swimming & diving posted one of its best showings at the Terrapin Cup Invitational in recent memory as the Dragons finished fourth of eight teams. Among Drexel's top performers was Sherif Madkour who won the 200 breast and added top three finishes in the 100 breast and the 200 IM. Diver Ian Jevnick also provided a storyline with his first appearance on the 3-meter board. He won the event and took second on the 1-meter board. Maryland won the Terrapin Cup with Drexel finishing ahead of fifth-place Villanova, sixth-place Mary Washington, seventh-place Towson and eighth-place West Virginia.
Drexel got its first points in an individual event when Adrian Sabovici took second in the B final of the 500 free to take 10th overall when he finished with a time of 4:36.81 to earn the Dragons seven points. In the 200 IM, Drexel had two swimmers finish in the top four as Madkour's time of 1:52.49 gave him third place while T.J. Southmayd took fourth at 1:54.32 as the two combined to earn 31 points in the event. Cole Gindhart was the Dragons' top finisher in the 400 IM when he took 13th with a time of 4:17.57 to earn four points.
Drexel picked up two top five finishes when Armagan Yavuz and Mert Karsiyakalilar took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 fly as the pair bested all entrants from schools other than Maryland. Yavuz finished with a time of 49.86 while Karsiyakalilar finished in 50.08 as the pair combined for 29 team points in the event. In the 100 breast, Madkour picked up his second third-place finish of the invitational when he posted a 57.27 to defeat entrants from all schools other than those from UConn. The finish gave Drexel 16 team points. Dan Zelkind put his name on the point-scoring sheet when he finished 15th in the 100 back with a time of 54.21 that netted two points.
Sabovici had an impressive showing in the 1650 free as he finished in 15:52.87 to earn fourth place and 15 points. The senior topped all UConn entrants and finished behind a pair of Maryland swimmers and a William & Mary competitor. Zalkind picked up his second point-scoring effort when he finished second in the B final of the 200 back to take 10th overall with a time of 1:55.30.
One of the highlights of the invitational came in the 200 breast as Madkour triumphed in the final. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Madkour's victory was the margin by which he defeated his competitors. His time of 2:01.49 was 1.77 seconds faster than second place Tomasz Sobek of UConn and more than seven seconds faster than any swimmer from a Colonial Athletic Association school. The victory gave Drexel 20 team points. Yavuz picked up his second top-five finish when he took fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.06 and defeated all swimmers from schools other than Maryland en route to 15 team points.
In relay action, the quartet of Southmayd, Madkour, Karsiyakalilar, Sabovici took fifth in the 400 medley that was good for 28 points as they recorded a time of 3:27.29. In the 200 medley, Drexel took seventh with a time of 1:35.97 for 24 points.
Ian Jevnick's return to the 3-meter board after recovering from an off-season injury highlighted the diving action at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. After cruising through prelims with a score of 321.25, more than 44 points higher than the next highest qualifier, Jevnick was tested by Bradley Schott of UConn. Schott recorded a score of 314.30 in the finals but the junior was up to the challenge as he compiled a score of 318.45 to win the event and 20 team points. Stephen Cal qualified sixth in the prelims and finished eighth with a score of 216.00 to give Drexel 11 points. On the one-meter board, Jevnick took second with a score of 275.35 to finish only behind UConn's Stephen Ferreira who totaled 316.90. Cal picked up his second eighth-place finish of the invitational when he recorded a score of 213.55 in the finals.
