Drexel Opens Season with Varsity Eight Second Place at Navy Day Regatta

Philadelphia - The 2008-09 Drexel Crew season got off to a flying start as the Dragons' varsity eight captured second place in a field of 13 at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River. Navy took first place while the Dragons outraced third place Rutgers by 3.4 seconds and fourth place Temple by over nine seconds. The Drexel junior varsity boat took third place behind a pair of Naval Academy entrants in a competition that featured eight boats. The novice boat claimed fifth place among 23 entrants.
The Drexel varsity eight crossed the line at 13:38.70. The Dragons time bettered other area entrants including Saint Joseph's, Lehigh and Delaware along with Colgate and Georgetown. The junior varsity boat topped Lehigh, Rutgers, Delaware and Philadelphia University with the Dragons clocked at 14:10.40. The novice boat included many who were competing in their first competitve race at any level. The boat's time of 14:15.00 bested boats from Lehigh, La Salle and the novice lightweight boat of Penn.
