Frank Elegar to Play for U.S. Virgin Islands Team in the Pan American Games
Frank Elegar will compete in the Pan Am Games beginning on July 26 in Brazil
Philadelphia, Pa.—Drexel University men’s basketball player Frank Elegar will suit up for the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team at the upcoming Pan American Games. Elegar and his team will open play on July 26 against Puerto Rico in Pool B action. The Pan American Games are being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Elegar and the national team qualified for the Pan American Games by winning a silver medal at the 2006 Centrobasket Tournament held in Panama. Elegar's team pulled one of the biggest upsets in the team's history with an 85-84 win over previously unbeaten Puerto Rico in the semifinals. The Puerto Rican team, which was led by Orlando Magic guard Carlos Arroyo, entered the tournament ranked 11th in the world by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Elegar's team lost to Panama in the championship game, 73-59.
Elegar, who will be a senior in the fall, led Drexel in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage as a junior. He was named Second Team All-CAA and was an All-Region selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
