Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel men’s swimming and diving team was edged 152-146 by Colonial Athletic Association rival, Delaware, Saturday at Drexel Pool. The Dragons notched 10 first-place finishes in the losing effort, including a school record-setting victory by Brett Molash in the 3-meter dive. The women were defeated by Delaware, 202.50-93.50, and by Vermont, 177-121.
In the men’s competition, the 200 medley relay team of seniors Ian MacKinnon and Barbaros Cem Pasaoglu and freshmen Adrian Sabovici and Mert Karsiyakalilar won the event with a time of 1:37.25. Pasaoglu, Karsiyakalilar and Sabovici returned to the water and each recorded two individual victories. Pasaoglu finished first in the 100 (47.78) and 200 (1:44.88) freestyle events. Cem Karali also swam well for Drexel in the 200 freestyle, placing third in 1:49.53, and junior Dan Robbins placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.92. Karsiyakalilar returned for first place in the 100 (51.89) and 200 butterfly (1:56.41) and Sabovici notched a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.70 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:13.87. MacKinnon also notched an individual first-place finish with a 53.87 showing in the 100 backstroke.
On the boards, senior Brett Molash swept the meet and set a new school record. In the 3-meter competition, Molash won with 357.55 points, to break his previous school record of 353.45 set last season. Molash also took the 1-meter event in 291.10. Sophomore Jake Roberson finished in second with 249.88 in the 1-meter event and earned a third-place finish in the 3-meter dive with a point total of 279.35.
On the women’s side, Drexel was led by sophomores Sarah Keeley and Kaitlin Slowey and junior Katie McCann. Slowey and Keeley finished first and third in the 200 IM with times of 2:15.22 and 2:16.76, respectively. McCann earned runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:11.40) and the 1000 freestyle (10:35.83) and in the 100 breaststroke, the Dragon women earned second- and fourth-place finishes when Keeley touched the wall in 1:08.65 and Alison Augustyn finished in the fourth-best time of the day in 1:12.10.
In the diving events, the Dragons continued to dominate. Sophomore Kate Hynes won the 3-meter event with a score of 316.40 and junior Stephanie Battaglia grabbed second place with 205.00 points. In the 1-meter event, Hynes took the top spot with 270.05 points while Battaglia was edged by Emily Pretz of Delaware, 200.25-198.05, and placed third.
The Dragons will be back in action when they travel to the Maryland Invitational. The meet begins on Thursday, Nov. 16 and concludes on Saturday, Nov. 18.
