Crew Wins 3rd Straight Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, Regains Men's Title

PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Crew won its third consecutive overall title and regained the men's points title at the 77thannual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday, May 9 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.
Drexel became the first crew since Purdue (five in a row, 2000-2004) to win three consecutive overall team titles.
The Dragons medaled in six events. They won gold in the men's second varsity eight and the men's freshmen eight. Drexel took home a silver medal in the men's varsity four. The Dragons also won bronze in the women's varsity eight, men's varsity eight and the men's freshmen four. Drexel reclaimed the men's points title from Michigan after winning it in 2013.
Drexel's men's second varsity eight defended the boats gold medal in perhaps the best and closest race of the day. In the Lois Krall boat, the Dragons edged Temple by eight-tenths of a second - 5:45.747 to 5:45.829 - pulling ahead in the final 250 meters. Drexel posted a winning 6:15.002 in its heat to advance to the semifinals. The boat rowed to a sub-six 5:55.024, pacing Michigan by almost three seconds, to advance to the finals.
The men's freshmen eight took home the Dragons' first gold medal of the day, in the Joseph Greipp boat, winning with a sub-six time of 5:54.158. On Friday, they paced the competition in their heat with a 6:30.058 to advance to the semifinals where they won with a 6:02.454.
The men's varsity four won the silver medal in the LeBow College of Business boat with a time of 6:33.884, just two-tenths of a second behind Brock's winning 6:33.682. The boat advanced to the quarterfinals Friday, following a winning 6:55.712 time Friday in heat three. The boat finished second with a 7:11 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals where it advanced to the finals with a second-place time of 6:36.194, edging third-place Brock by half a second.
Drexel's men's varsity eight won the bronze medal in the final Saturday in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat with a blazing 5:45.696 time. FIT and Michigan finished one-two in an extremely tight race - 5:37.169 to 5:37.925. The Dragons won their semifinal, beating Virginia by three-tenths of a second with a 5:41.600. The boat won its heat by open water with a time of 6:04.922 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat to advance to the semifinals.
The women preceded the men, taking home a bronze medal of their own in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a final time of 6:43.674. UMass won with a 6:37.376. The Dragons won their heat with a 6:51.504 to advance to Saturday's semifinal where they won with a time of 6:37.576.
Drexel's freshmen four won the bronze medal, Drexel's first medal of the day, in a tight race with a 6:44.626. The boat finished less than three-tenths of a second off of Bowdoin's 6:44.382 The Dragons' four began competition winning its heat Friday with a 7:10.247 in the Oxholm boat. They advanced to Saturday's semifinal where they came in second with a 6:47.724 to move on.
Drexel's women's second varsity eight, in the Maria Papadakis boat, finished fourth overall in the final with a time of 6:49.876, just eight-tenths of a second off of third-place North Carolina. UMass won with a 6:40.401. The boat finished Drexel's long day in Friday's heats with a winning time of 7:21.171. The boat advanced to the semifinals where they finished second behind Bucknell with a time of 6:51.590 to move on.
The Dragons rowed singles for the first time this season as Taylor Brady finished sixth overall, improving on her heat time with a 8:49.407. She rowed to a second-place 9:25.131 to advance straight to Saturday's final.
Drexel's women's pair, in the Jeremy and Theresa MacDonald boat, moved on to Saturday with a second-place 8:20.680 in heats on Friday. They raced to an 8:12.151, falling just five seconds short of the final.
For the men, Drexel's George Twardyrowed to a second-place time of his own, 8:05.343, to advance to Saturday's semifinals where he finished fourth with a 7:41.899 but did not advance to the finals.
Drexel's freshmen eight women posted a second-place 7:27.016 in the Marlene Buckley boat to advance to Saturday's semifinals. They rowed to a fourth-place 7:06.899 and fell short of the finals.
Continuing Friday success with the varsity fours was the women in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat as they advanced to the Saturday semifinal with a time of 7:50.197 in the heats. The boat finished third in its semifinal with a 7:45.061 and fell just short of the final.
The men's pair, in the Toby Wallace boat, finished with the fourth fastest time of all pairs, 7:08.999; however, all the top boats were in the heat, and Drexel's fourth place finish was not enough to advance. Drexel's men's pair won the gold medal in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
The Blue and Gold has now won 48 Dad Vail medals in its history, including 18 gold. The Dragons became the first back-to-back-to-back winner since Purdue won five years in a row from 2000-2004.
Drexel sent 13 boats into competition Friday, advancing 12 of them to Saturday semifinals and finals. The Dragons then advanced eight boats to finals before medaling in six of eight events.
On Friday, Drexel head coach Paul Savell was named the Matt Ledwidth Award winner for Dad Vail Coach of the Year (see release).
Drexel's women return to action next weekend on May 17 at the CAA Championships on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The men will take to the Mercer Lake waters on May 29-31 for the IRA National Championships.

Drexel became the first crew since Purdue (five in a row, 2000-2004) to win three consecutive overall team titles.
The Dragons medaled in six events. They won gold in the men's second varsity eight and the men's freshmen eight. Drexel took home a silver medal in the men's varsity four. The Dragons also won bronze in the women's varsity eight, men's varsity eight and the men's freshmen four. Drexel reclaimed the men's points title from Michigan after winning it in 2013.
Drexel's men's second varsity eight defended the boats gold medal in perhaps the best and closest race of the day. In the Lois Krall boat, the Dragons edged Temple by eight-tenths of a second - 5:45.747 to 5:45.829 - pulling ahead in the final 250 meters. Drexel posted a winning 6:15.002 in its heat to advance to the semifinals. The boat rowed to a sub-six 5:55.024, pacing Michigan by almost three seconds, to advance to the finals.

The boat finished less than three-tenths of a second off of Bowdoin's 6:44.382 The Dragons' four began competition winning its heat Friday with a 7:10.247 in the Oxholm boat. They advanced to Saturday's semifinal where they came in second with a 6:47.724 to move on.
Drexel's women's second varsity eight, in the Maria Papadakis boat, finished fourth overall in the final with a time of 6:49.876, just eight-tenths of a second off of third-place North Carolina. UMass won with a 6:40.401. The boat finished Drexel's long day in Friday's heats with a winning time of 7:21.171. The boat advanced to the semifinals where they finished second behind Bucknell with a time of 6:51.590 to move on.

Drexel's freshmen eight women posted a second-place 7:27.016 in the Marlene Buckley boat to advance to Saturday's semifinals. They rowed to a fourth-place 7:06.899 and fell short of the finals.
Continuing Friday success with the varsity fours was the women in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat as they advanced to the Saturday semifinal with a time of 7:50.197 in the heats. The boat finished third in its semifinal with a 7:45.061 and fell just short of the final.
The men's pair, in the Toby Wallace boat, finished with the fourth fastest time of all pairs, 7:08.999; however, all the top boats were in the heat, and Drexel's fourth place finish was not enough to advance. Drexel's men's pair won the gold medal in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
