Philadelphia – Badr Ouabdelmoumen (Rabat, Morocco) of men's tennis and the Drexel women's basketball team have been named CLEAR Athletes of the Week from Monday, April 8 through April 14 by Drexel Athletics.
Ouabdelmoumen defeated Saint Joseph's Jose Sierra in two sets last Thursday afternoon. He won 6-1 and 6-2 in the Dragons' 4-2 loss to the Hawks. On Saturday, Ouabdelmoumen won his singles and doubles matches helping Drexel defeat conference rival Delaware for the first time in program history, 4-3. Ouabdelmoumen and teammate Xabier Saavedra outlasted the Blue Hen's Nolan Gelman and Eron Andrews in doubles, 8-7. In singles play, Ouabdelmoumen dropped his first set to Troy Beneck, 6-2, before winning two-straight sets, 6-4 and 7-5. The sophomore is now 8-3 in singles and 5-5 in doubles play this spring. Together, the men's team improved to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Drexel women's basketball team became the first Philadelphia Division I team ever to win a postseason tournament as they captured the WNIT championship with a 46-43 win over Utah at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. The Dragons finished their season with a 28-10 mark, setting program records for wins (28) and scoring defense (51.4 points per game allowed). Senior Hollie Mershon, who scored the last four points of the game to help Drexel take the lead with 20 seconds to play and hold on for the win, was named the WNIT Most Valuable Player. She had 14 points against Utah, including 12 in the second half. Senior Taylor Wootton, who played in her program-record 131st-career game in the title tilt on Saturday, scored a game-high 16 points and became the 21st player in program history to reach 1,000 career points early in the second half. She finished her career with 1,003 and was named to the All-Tournament Team. As a squad, the Dragons turned the ball over just once in the championship game, believed to be a program record.
The men's tennis will face Wagner on Friday, April 12 in its final regular-season match of the season. Competition will begin at noon at the Drexel Tennis Courts.
