PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's and women's tennis teams will open their 2012-13 campaigns over the weekend, as both squads head to local tournaments to kick off the fall. The women will head down 33rd Street to play in the Cissie Leary Invitational at Penn, while the men will take part in the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
Led by juniors Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales, the women's team is looking to build off an impressive 2011-12 season, which saw the Dragons go 13-8 on the year in dual matches. They concluded the regular season by winning six of their last seven tilts, including five in a row from March 3 through April 4. The Dragons advanced to the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament before seeing their season end with a defeat at the hands of top-ranked VCU.
On the men's side, Drexel went 9-8, fueled by current senior Jeganathan Srinivasan and sophomore Badr Ouabdelmoumen. Ouabdelmoumen became the first Drexel freshman ever to earn All-CAA recognition when he earned a spot on the third team. The men also finished strong, winning four in a row and eight of eleven at one point during the spring, including a 5-2 defeat of CAA rival Hofstra.
Draws for the tournaments will be available shortly. The Cissie Leary bracket will be available at www.PennAthletics.com, while the Saint Joseph's Invitational draw will be posted on www.SJUHawks.com. A full recap following the weekend's events will be posted here.
