PHILADELPHIA - Gabriela Maringean and Jasmina Rosseel, two integral parts of the Drexel Women's Basketball CAA Championship in 2009, added more titles to their resumes recently, as both led their teams to national championships in Europe. Marginean's Arras squad captured the French Cup over the weekend, while Rosseel's Crack Blue Cats were crowned champions of Belgium earlier in the spring.
Marginean's Arras team overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit on Sunday to defeat the reigning French League champion Bourges Basket in the French Cup Final. Trailing by as many as 18 points in the game, Arras relied on Marginean to hit crucial free throws down the stretch that helped seal the 64-58 comeback victory. Marginean finished with 11 points in the title game.
Rosseel led her Blue Cats to a series victory over Kangoeroes-Boom, two games to one. She contributed eight points with six rebounds and four assists in the squad's Game One victory, then helped them to a 66-61 triumph in the third and deciding contest. For her efforts, Rosseel was named the All-Belgium League's Guard of the Year, and was a First Team All-Belgium League selection.
In addition to the two titles won by Drexel women's basketball alums, guard Jennifer Stjarnstrom also had a successful season with her Italian pro team, San Martino Di Lupari. San Martino finished with a record of 20-6 on the season, falling in the semifinals of the Italian League to Bologna.
