Marist Hands Dragons First Loss of Season, 2-1, in Home Opener

Philadelphia – Marist came from behind to give Drexel its first loss of the season in the Dragons' first match on Vidas Field this year. Andrew Goldberg gave Drexel (3-1-0) a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute, but Marist (3-0-1) answered with goals by Stephan Brossard and Joe Touloumis and withstood a late surge by the Dragons to remain undefeated on the season.
Drexel outshot Marist 18-14 and 10-8 in the second half. Marist keeper Joe Pilla saw his string of consecutive shutouts come to an end but he was challenged numerous times and came up with six saves in the match. Alex Reber made five stops between the pipes for the Dragons.
The teams played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes with shots dead even at four apiece. Drexel's best scoring opportunity came in the final minute of the period when Max Crockett found and in-ball on his foot at the six-yard box and blasted a shot that was smothered by keeper Joe Pilla on contact.
The Dragons came out as the early aggressors in the second half with Crockett turning in more to the same work he produced in the first period with three shots in the opening minutes. The Dragons broke through in the 66th minute when Crockett outmuscled his defender to settle a ball just outside the 18-yard box. He dribbled it once and served a cross to the left side of the goal where Goldberg headed it home. The goal was the first of Goldberg's career and the first allowed by keeper Joe Pilla on the season.
Goldberg nearly scored a second goal less than a minute later when he blasted home another cross in the box. But an offside flag disallowed the goal.
Drexel's 1-0 lead was short-lived when, in the 69th minute, Stephan Brossard beat his defender on the left side the chipped a shot over a charging Alex Reber to even the score at 1-1.
In the 76th minute Marist pulled ahead. This time Joe Touloumis found himself open at the top of the box and after carrying it inside the 18-yard mark, blasted a shot that got under the hands of Reber and landed in the left side of the net.
The Dragons nearly found their equalizer with 10 seconds left as Mike Crosse connected on a header inside the six-yard box, but Pilla was there to make his final save of the contest and preserve his third victory of the season.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Wednesday, Sept. 16 for a 4:00 Philadelphia Soccer Six match against La Salle.
