Drexel Named 2009 Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Champion, Assumpcao and Ermold Named All-Stars
Philadelphia - Fabio Assumpcao and Greg Ermold closed out their senior seasons by earning places on the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star team for their performance this year. The Dragons, as a team, shared the Soccer Six Championship with Temple this season as both teams posted 2-0-0 records in league play. Assumpcao tied for the league's lead in goals this season and Ermold was one of its top defenders this year. The awards were given out at the annual Soccer Six Awards Banquet held at the University City Sheraton on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Assumpcao has been Drexel's top offensive threat at midfield for the past four seasons. The talented Brazilian was most dangerous on free kicks this season, depositing the majority of his scores on set pieces. He was also a 2007 Soccer Six honoree and the league's Rookie of the Year in 2006. Assumpcao also earned Second Team All-CAA honors this year.
Ermold captured his first Soccer Six All-Star honor as Drexel's top defender this season. The senior was an All-CAA pick in 2008 after turning in a break-out season on defense for the Dragons. He was also a key member of Drexel's 2007 CAA regular-season championship team.
Drexel's co-league championship crown is its sixth as a member of the Soccer Six and first championship since 2003 when it won the second of two straight titles. The Philadelphia Soccer Six is a regional league that includes the six NCAA Div. I men's soccer teams in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1979 as the Philadelphia Soccer Seven, when Philadelphia Textile was a Div. I program and was in the league. The schools played a full round-robin schedule until 2002 when the league shifted to playing two conference games per season and selecting champions based on those results. Drexel earned its first league championship in 1984.
