Three Dragons Pick Up Top Four Finishes at Cornell Body Bar Invitational

Ithaca, N.Y. - Drexel wrestling faced some of the top competition in the region at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational with three Dragons earning top four finishes in his weight class. Redshirt freshman Joe Booth claimed second place in the 157-pound weight class while Kyle Frey took third in the 285-pound weight class. Senior co-captain Steve Mytych finished fourth at 133 pounds as the Dragons finished ninth among the 12 teams competing. Kent State took the team title with host Cornell and Maryland tying for second.
Booth's run through the 157-pound weight class began when the seven-seed earned a major decision victory over Wyoming's Eric Jones, 11-3, to set up a second round showdown with second-seeded Kyle John of Maryland. Booth prevailed over John, 7-3, to send the one of the division's favorites to the consolation bracket. Booth's third-round match against third-seeded DJ Meagher of Cornell ended 2:04 into the match after Meagher defaulted due to injury to send Booth to the championship final. Booth was pinned in the final by Binghamton's Justin Lister.
Frey entered the heavyweight division as the second seed and opened his tournament run with a victory over Buffalo's Jason Weber, 12-6. The junior picked up a second-round victory over Cornell's Taylor Moor, 8-1. In the semifinals, Frey was upset by third-seeded Patrick Gilmore of Maryland, 7-4. In the consolation final, Frey defeated Corey Waite of Binghamton, 7-4, to take third place.
Mytych continued his transition to the 133-pound weight class from 125-pounds against stiff competition. In his first round match, Mytych cruised to a technical fall victory in the first period over Buffalo's Chris Conti. His second-round match saw the senior pull out a 7-5 decision over Seth Ecker of Ithaca. The semifinal match with second-seeded Danny Mitcheff of Kent State was deadlocked after regulation time. Neither wrestler could earn a takedown in sudden victory time but Mitcheff was able to earn the victory, 6-5, in the second tiebreaker period to advance to the final. Mitcheff went on to the title while Mytych dropped a 5-3 decision to Cornell's Mike Grey.
At 197 pounds, Jack Callendar battled through the consolation bracket to pick up a sixth-place finish. The eighth-seeded Callendar won his first round match by major decision, 12-4, over Army's Casey Hedash. After falling to top-seed and eventual champion Hudson Taylor of Maryland, Callendar toppled Chris Manna of Columbia, 5-3, in the consolation bracket. A 9-3 victory of Daniel Mills of Army set up a fifth-place match-up with Adam Cogar of Kent State. Cogar pulled out a 3-1 victory to give Callendar his sixth-place finish.
