Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will join forces with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to raise awareness of breast cancer at tonight's game against Delaware. As part of the WBCA's "Think Pink" program, Drexel and Delaware players will be sporting pink headbands and wristbands. Fans who wear pink to the game will receive free admission. Several campus groups will also have fund-raisers at the game with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The week set aside for this year's initiative is Feb. 8 – 17. Many women's teams throughout the country are taking part in the program and helping to raise money and awareness of this health crisis in America.
Pink ribbons and ribbon-shaped pretzels will be on sale with the proceeds going to the Komen Foundation. Wristbands and headbands for the teams have been graciously donated by 3rd Power Outlet. Both the Drexel and Delaware coaching staffs will be wearing pink to support the cause. In addition fans will be given pink beads donated by the Coca-Cola company.
The NCAA has also joined the "Think Pink" initiative by implementing the "Calling for a Cure" campaign where all NCAA women's basketball officials will be blowing a pink whistle February 8-17. More than 900 teams across the country will be participating in the effort this month.
Drexel tips off against Delaware at 7:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons will be playing for their first season sweep of the Blue Hens since the 1998-99 season when both teams were in the America East Conference.
