Box Score

Richmond, Va. – Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a career-high 15 points, but VCU scored 11 straight points midway through the second half to pull away from the Dragons, 76-62. The Rams improved to 15-4 overall and now lead the CAA with an 8-1 record. The Dragons fell to 9-12 and 2-7 in CAA play.

Randy Oveneke (Antwerpen, Belgium/Saint-Anna College) scored on a driving lay-up to cut VCU’s lead to 37-36. VCU’s Eric Maynor, a CAA Player of the Year candidate, answered with 11 consecutive points as the Rams opened up a 12-point lead. Drexel shot 46 percent in the second half and made four three-pointers, but the Rams made 14 of their 16 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Drexel trailed by just one at the half, 27-26, despite getting no points from either Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) or Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire). Both players picked up two early fouls. Elegar got his second foul at the 15:25 mark and didn’t return in the half. Yannick Formbor (Roselle, N.J./St. Patrick's) and Kenny Tribbett (Berlin, N.J./Chester) each saw extended minutes due to the foul trouble and the pair combined to pick up five points and five rebounds in Elegar’s absence. Hampton had eight of his 15 points in the first half and finished the game with five assists.

Elegar managed to finish with 11 points and five rebounds. His second rebound gave him 600 in his career. Hawthorne had nine points in the second half, all from behind the arc.

The Dragons conclude their two-game road trip on Wednesday night at Georgia State. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Georgia State University Sports Arena.
